What is Pure Ceylon Tea
Pure Ceylon Tea is the world’s finest black tea — a premium tea that originates exclusively from the island nation of Sri Lanka, once known as Ceylon. Grown, harvested, and packed on Sri Lankan soil, it represents unmatched quality, rich aroma, and exceptional flavour.
This tea is certified under the globally recognized Lion Logo — a mark of authenticity and quality overseen by the Tea Board of Sri Lanka. Only tea that is 100% grown and packed in Sri Lanka can carry this symbol, ensuring you enjoy the true essence of Ceylon tea in every cup.
The Legacy of Ceylon Tea
From Coffee Fields to Tea Empire
The story of Ceylon Tea began in the mid-19th century during British colonial rule. Originally, Sri Lanka’s hills were covered in coffee plantations, but a devastating fungus — coffee leaf rust — wiped out the industry. This crisis led to a pivotal shift in Sri Lanka’s agricultural legacy.
In 1867, Scottish planter James Taylor planted the island’s first commercial tea crop at the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy. This modest 19-acre plantation marked the birth of what would become Sri Lanka’s most important export. Taylor’s expertise and passion for tea transformed Sri Lanka’s economy and reputation forever.
Within a few years, Sri Lankan tea began winning hearts and markets around the world. The first shipment of Ceylon tea reached London in the early 1870s, introducing the world to the unique flavours born from Sri Lanka’s rich soil and varied micro-climates.
