What Actually Makes Tea "Ceylon"?

True Ceylon tea comes from one place: Sri Lanka. Much like Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France, genuine Ceylon tea is 100% grown on Sri Lankan soil, from the Camellia sinensis plant, nothing blended in from anywhere else.

That's not always what's on the shelf or what you find online. Tea labelled "Ceylon-style," or blended with leaf from other countries, doesn't carry the same claim, however close it looks in the packet.

Every true tea in this collection; our black, green and white ranges is sourced directly from single estates, and certified organic by the Soil Association UK. Each ingredient is true to the name” Ceylon”. What's on the label is what's in the cup, nothing else mixed in.

The final characteristic is craftsmanship. Generational tea artisans across Sri Lanka still hand-pluck each harvest, with some premium teas manually crafted and processed by master tea makers. Ceyara honours this by sourcing directly from single estates that follow these methods, directly supporting the communities behind them, while ensuring our leaves arrive with maximum freshness.

The Different Types of Ceylon Tea

Ceylon tea isn't only black tea, though that's what the name is usually famous for. Sri Lanka produces genuine green, white, and herbal teas too. Each has its own collection page if you want to go deeper.

Black tea is Ceylon's signature

Fully oxidised, brisk, and the tea most people picture when they hear "Ceylon." Explore our full Ceylon Black Tea range.

Ceylon Green Tea

Green tea is grown in the same regions but processed to stop oxidation almost immediately. The result is a lighter, fresher, more vegetal cup. See our Ceylon Green Tea collection.

Ceylon White Tea

White tea is the rarest of the three, minimally processed, made from young buds and leaves, producing a pale, delicate infusion. Our own white tea is hand-picked from estates in Haputale and Boralanda; read more or buy from our Ceylon White Tea page.

Our Tea Formats

Pyramid Tea Bags are for the everyday cup of tea. Full-leaf tea is given room to unfurl properly inside a spacious pyramid. So you get a fuller, truer cup without the extra step of loose leaf.

Loose Leaf Tea is made for a slower, mindful cup. Whole, unbroken leaves for anyone who wants real control over strength and steep time. The closest you'll get to tasting the tea the way it left the estate.
